In a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, it is revealed that iOS 17 will introduce a unique feature that can transform an iPhone into a smart display when locked. This functionality will work in both portrait and landscape modes, similar to devices like Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest.
When the iPhone is not in active use and placed on a surface like a desk or bedside table, it will showcase useful widgets such as news highlights, weather updates, and appointment reminders. Gurman mentions that Apple has been developing this feature since last year, and the user interface will have a dark background for easy readability and access to information. It builds upon the always-on lock screen feature introduced in iOS 16.
This feature serves as a precursor to Apple's upcoming standalone smart display device, anticipated to be akin to a HomePod with an integrated touchscreen.
Details on whether this feature will be exclusive to Pro models or available on all iPhones running iOS 17 remain uncertain. Apple is expected to reveal iOS 17 at the WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5, where other notable additions to the iPhone software are anticipated. Reports suggest possibilities like app sideloading, potential third-party app store integration, a new health app, a journaling app, and improved versions of AirPlay and SharePlay.
