Samsung has developed a new prototype display for its folding phones that allows them to be used in 360 degrees. This could provide a new direction for the company's mobile devices, opening up new opportunities for their development and use.
Samsung Display has unveiled a new prototype display that can be rotated 360 degrees. This feature is particularly beneficial for products such as smartphones and tablets, where it can be easier to utilize the screen in various angles. John Lucas, a spokesperson for Samsung Display, told The Verge in an email that this innovative display will make its debut at CES 2023.
Samsung Display has been Showing off "Flex In & Out" prototypes for a while now. Back in 2021, they introduced a design that could be folded in all directions at the International Meeting for Information Displays (IMID). However, this approach was different; the display unfolded like an "S" with multiple segments. As of August 2022, Samsung's Fold line is still using displays that only fold flat in one direction.
It's possible that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 phone will feature a less-obvious crease in its screen thanks to a similar hinge design.
The proposed design for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 would improve upon existing complaints about the "U-shaped" hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, which creates a noticeable crease. This problem is particularly apparent on models with a larger battery capacity, like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with a 4000mAh battery and the Galaxy Z Flip4 with a 3000mAh battery. The new design will result in an interface that more closely resembles those of smartphones without prominent creases, such as Oppo Find N2 and Motorola Razr III.
It is currently unknown when Samsung will release the Z Fold 5 smartphone. However, it is likely that the device will be released alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5 at an upcoming event known as "Galaxy Unpacked."
